Guest commentary: Lunch at the library a perfect program for low-income kids

Published Jun 26

What began in 2009 as a fledgling program at a handful of libraries has grown to 100 or more libraries in communities from San Diego to Santa Rosa that will be serving close to 100,000 meals.

There are 3.7 million low-income school kids in CA who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch to get at least one nutritious meal. When most schools close this 30 days for the summer, those children still need a midday meal.

Lunch at the Library, a program offered across the state, is helping to bridge the summer gap by providing free, healthy midday meals for children eighteen and under.

In Contra Costa the participating libraries are: the Concord library, the Contra Costa County library, the Crockett library, the El Sobrante library, the Pittsburg library and the San Pablo library.
