End of an era: Nellie's Soulfood says goodbye to Oakland

Published Thursday June 30

Dozens of customers gathered at the West Oakland mainstay to get a last order of peach cobbler, smothered steak or chicken as the restaurant prepared to shut its doors for the last time.

After fifty years, founder Nellie Ozen, now 84, and her daughter, Quinette Ozen, who officially owns the business, are hanging up their aprons and retiring.

Longtime customers are not jolly about it. Following the announcement on Facebook earlier this 30 days that Thu would be Nellie’s last day of service, customers have come to say goodbye.

Muedeking commented she is sad to see the restaurant close. But I guess fifty years is a long time in this business.
